Solah Somvar Vrat Katha
The Sacred Story of Lord Shiva & Goddess Parvati’s Divine Grace
Once upon a time, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati arrived on Earth while traveling and reached the sacred city of Amaravati. The King of Amaravati had built a magnificent temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, where Lord Shiva decided to stay. One day, Goddess Parvati said to Lord Shiva, “O Lord! Let us play a game of Chausar (dice) today.” The game began, and right at that moment, the temple priest arrived to perform daily worship.
Goddess Parvati asked, “O Priest! Tell us, who will win this game?” The priest predicted Lord Shiva would win. However, when the game concluded, Goddess Parvati emerged victorious. Enraged by the priest’s false prediction, Goddess Parvati cursed him to suffer from leprosy, and the priest immediately became afflicted with the disease. After some time, celestial Apsaras descended from heaven to pray at the temple and, seeing the priest’s condition, asked him the reason for his affliction.
Responding to their questions, the priest narrated the entire incident. The Apsaras then informed him about the 16 Somvar Vrat (Monday Fast) and advised him to pray to Lord Mahadev to relieve his suffering. Curious, the priest eagerly asked for the procedure. The Apsara explained, “Observe a fast on Monday without consuming food or water. After performing the evening puja, prepare Churma made from half a seer (approx. 500g) of wheat flour, create three clay idols, and worship Lord Bholenath using sandalwood paste, rice, ghee, jaggery, lamp, and Bel Patra leaves.”
“Offer the Churma to Lord Shiva, and then divide this sacred prasad into three equal parts: distribute the first part among the people, feed the second part to a cow, and consume the third part yourself before drinking water. Follow this procedure for 16 Mondays. On the 17th Monday, prepare Churma made from five seers of wheat flour Baati, offer it to Lord Shiva, and distribute it to all, then partake in the prasad with your family. By doing so, Lord Shiva will fulfill all your heartfelt desires.” Saying this, the Apsaras departed for heaven.
The priest began performing the Monday fast and worship with complete devotion according to the prescribed procedure and was soon completely cured of leprosy. Sometime later, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati visited the temple again. Seeing the priest completely healthy, Goddess Parvati inquired about the reason for his recovery. The priest narrated the divine glory of the 16 Somvar Vrat. Inspired, Goddess Parvati also observed this fast, and as a result, her estranged son Lord Kartikeya returned and became obedient to his mother.
Puzzled by his change of heart, Lord Kartikeya asked Mother Gauri, “What is the reason that my heart has become so deeply devoted to your feet?” Goddess Parvati explained the power of her Monday fast. Thereupon, Kartikeya also observed the fast, as a result of which he was reunited with his long-lost friend. Surprised by their unexpected reunion, the friend asked the reason, learned the procedure of the fast, and observed the 16 Somvar Vrat with a desire to get married.
By the grace of the fast, the friend traveled abroad, where the Swayamvar (marriage choice ceremony) of the King’s daughter was taking place. The King had taken a vow that his daughter would marry whomever the royal elephant placed the garland upon. Out of curiosity to watch the ceremony, the young Brahmin sat on one side. The elephant approached and placed the garland around the Brahmin youth’s neck. The marriage was celebrated with grand pomp, and they began living happily together.
One day, the princess asked her husband, “O Lord! What virtuous deed did you perform that led the royal elephant to choose you over all the princes?” The Brahmin explained the complete 16 Somvar Vrat. The princess then observed the fast to be blessed with a child and gave birth to a highly virtuous son. When the son grew up, he asked, “Mother! By what virtue was I born to you?” The princess shared the sacred 16 Somvar Vrat of Lord Shiva with her son.
The son then observed the 16 Somvar Vrat with the desire to rule a kingdom. Soon after, royal messengers arrived from a neighboring kingdom to seek his hand for their princess. He was married to the princess, and upon the passing of the King, the young Brahmin youth ascended the throne. He continued to observe the fast regularly. One day, the King asked his Queen to accompany him with the puja materials to the Shiva temple, but out of pride, she sent the offerings through her maidservants instead.
“When the King completed the worship, a divine voice echoed from the sky, commanding him to banish his Queen, warning that she would bring ruin upon him otherwise. Obeying the divine command, the King banished the Queen.”
Cursing her misfortune, the Queen wandered into the city and met an old woman. Seeing her helpless state, the old woman placed a bundle of cotton yarn on the Queen’s head and sent her to the market. On the way, a strong storm blew away the bundle. Angry, the old woman scolded her and drove her away.
From there, the Queen reached the house of an oil-presser, but as soon as she entered, all the earthen pots cracked, and he threw her out. When she went to a river to drink water, the river dried up. When she reached a lake, the moment her hands touched the water, it turned worm-infested, yet she drank that water out of sheer thirst. Whichever tree she sat under to rest withered away immediately. Seeing the plight of the forest and lakes, cowherds took her to the Saint (Gosain) at a local temple.
After hearing her whole story, the Saint realized she was a noble woman suffering from terrible misfortune. Comforting her, he said, “Daughter! Stay at my ashram and worry about nothing.” The Queen began living in the ashram, but whichever item she touched became infested with worms. Distressed, the Saint asked, “Daughter! By offending which deity have you fallen into this state?” The Queen confessed, “I disobeyed my husband’s wish and failed to attend the worship of Lord Mahadev.”
The Saint prayed to Lord Shiva and instructed her, “Daughter! Observe the 16 Somvar Vrat with full devotion.” The Queen observed the 16 Somvar Vrat strictly according to the rituals. By the divine grace of the fast, the King suddenly remembered his Queen and sent messengers to search for her. Finding her at the ashram, the messengers reported her location to the King. The King went to the ashram and said to the Saint, “O Holy Master! She is my wife. I had banished her because Lord Shiva was displeased with her.”
“Now, by the grace of Lord Shankar, I have come to take her back. Please grant permission for her to return.” With the Saint’s permission, the King and Queen returned to their capital. The citizens decorated the entire city to welcome them, music played, and auspicious songs were sung. Thereafter, by the grace of Lord Shiva, the King observed the 16 Somvar Vrat every year, lived happily with his Queen, and eventually attained Shivlok (the supreme abode of Lord Shiva).
In the same manner, whichever person observes the 16 Somvar Vrat with devotion and according to the rituals, and reads or listens to this sacred Katha, has all their desires fulfilled and ultimately attains Shivlok.
