What is Choghadiya (चौघड़िया)?

Choghadiya, also known as Chogadia or Chaturshtika Muhurta, is an ancient Vedic time-division system used to determine auspicious (Shubh) and inauspicious (Ashubh) timings for starting important activities. The word comes from "Cho" (four) + "Ghadiya" (Ghati), as each muhurat approximates to 4 Ghati in the Hindu division of time.

How Does Choghadiya Work?

The system divides each day and night into 8 equal muhurat periods:

  • Day Choghadiya: Sunrise to Sunset divided into 8 equal parts (~90 min each)
  • Night Choghadiya: Sunset to next Sunrise divided into 8 equal parts

Each muhurat is governed by a planet following the cyclic sequence: Sun → Venus → Mercury → Moon → Saturn → Jupiter → Mars. The first muhurat of the day is always ruled by the weekday lord (e.g., Friday = Venus = Char).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Choghadiya and why is it used?
Choghadiya is a Vedic muhurat system that divides each day and night into 8 time periods. It's traditionally used for travel muhurtas but is now widely used for any auspicious work. It helps you identify the best time to start new ventures, travel, perform ceremonies, or avoid bad periods.
How accurate is this Choghadiya?
Our tool uses the NOAA solar algorithm for precise sunrise/sunset times and the verified Vedic planetary sequence (Sun→Venus→Mercury→Moon→Saturn→Jupiter→Mars) cross-checked with DrikPanchang. The day sequence uses +1 stepping and night uses -2 stepping in the planetary order, matching traditional Vedic texts.
What should I do if Shubh Choghadiya overlaps with Rahu Kaal?
Rahu Kaal is considered highly malefic. It is strongly advised to avoid starting any important work during Rahu Kaal, even if an auspicious Choghadiya like Amrit or Shubh falls during that period. Wait for the next auspicious window.
Which Choghadiya is best for travel?
Char Choghadiya (ruled by Venus) is considered the most auspicious for travel and journeys due to its moving nature. Labh and Amrit are also good alternatives for travel.
Can I use bad Choghadiya for any work?
Yes, some specific activities align with bad Choghadiyas: Udveg (Sun) is good for government-related work, Rog (Mars) is suitable for competitive activities and defeating enemies, and Kaal (Saturn) is appropriate for wealth accumulation and dealing with iron/steel materials.
What is the difference between Vaar Vela and Kaal Vela?
Both Vaar Vela and Kaal Vela are inauspicious periods during daytime. Vaar Vela is linked to the day lord while Kaal Vela is linked to the planet of sorrow. Kaal Ratri is the nighttime equivalent. All three should be avoided for manglik (auspicious) works.
