What is Ekadashi?
In the Hindu calendar, Ekadashi refers to the eleventh lunar day (Tithi) of the two lunar phases: the Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) and the Krishna Paksha (waning moon). Occurring twice a month, Ekadashi is considered highly auspicious for spiritual practices, fasting, and deep meditation. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe, and devotees observe this day with strict fasting and prayers to attain spiritual liberation (Moksha) and mental peace.
Spiritual Significance of Ekadashi Vrat & Fasting
Observing a fast (Vrat) on Ekadashi cleanses the physical body of toxins and helps calm the mind by reducing worldly attachments. According to Hindu scriptures, grains and beans absorb negative energies on Ekadashi, which is why refraining from consuming them is a core rule of the fast. Devotees spend their time chanting the Maha-mantra, reading Bhagavad Gita verses, reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama, and participating in night long prayers (Jagran).
