Goddess Laksmi is the provider of wealth and prosperity. The word Lakshmi has its roots in the Sanskrit word “Lakshya” which means ‘goal’ or ‘aim’. Devi Mahalakshmi is one of the most common deities worshiped in a Hindu home.
Devi Lakshmi is also the wife of Lord Vishnu and is said to have taken different forms in order to be with him in each of his incarnations. Thus, when he was the dwarf Vamana, she appeared from a lotus and was known as the Padma, or Kamala, both of which mean “Lotus”; when he was the ax-wielding Parashurama, the destroyer of the warrior class, she was his wife Dharani; when he was Lord Rama, she was his queen, Goddess Sita.
Devi Lakshmi is often depicted as a beautiful Goddess sitting or sometimes, standing on a full-bloomed red lotus. She has a golden complexion and has four hands representing transcendental beauty and omnipotence respectively. A pair of elephants is often portrayed standing on both her side, spraying a stream of water. It is believed that this symbolizes the ceaseless devotion of the people who worship her. She is the dynamic energy of Lord Vishnu and bestows one with the blessings of luxury, abundance, wealth, and prosperity. She helps relieve all miseries related to finances and debts.
Thus, chanting mantras of Goddess Lakshmi is said to produce a certain vibration which helps to bring about the desired change in our lives. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that the mantra is pronounced and enunciated properly.
