Hindu Baby Girl Names: 250+ Vedic Names With Meanings
Hindu baby girl names with meanings - 250+ Vedic, Puranic, modern and rare names, plus the nakshatra naming rules and the classical shape of a girl's name.
Choosing a name for your baby girl is a decision the family lives with for a lifetime. A Hindu girl’s name usually carries three things at once – a meaning, a family tradition, and the sound of the child’s birth star. This page gives you 250+ Hindu baby girl names with meanings, arranged so you can browse by meaning, by tradition (Vedic, Puranic, modern, rare), or by the letter you have been given.
Selecting a name for a newborn (Namkaran) is one of the most important samskaras in Hindu Dharma, usually held on the 11th or 12th day after birth, after the family has seen the baby’s birth chart (Kundali in Vedic astrology). In most traditions the priest reads the syllable (akshar) from the baby’s birth nakshatra, and the family then chooses a name that starts with that sound. The classical texts add one more rule for a girl: her name should end in a long vowel and sound soft rather than harsh.

Popular Hindu baby girl names include Aadhya (first power, a name of Durga), Ananya (unique), Aanya (gracious), Saanvi (a name of Lakshmi), Aadya (the beginning), Myra (beloved), Aaradhya (to be worshipped), Ira (earth), Riya (singer), Kiara (first ray of the sun) and Diya (lamp). A good name is easy to say, has a meaning the family is happy to repeat, and fits the letter given for the baby’s birth star.
What does a Vedic girl name mean?
A Vedic girl name comes from the Vedas and the Sanskrit tradition – the names of Vedic goddesses such as Aditi, Usha and Saraswati, the women sages (Arundhati, Gargi, Maitreyi, Lopamudra), and Vedic qualities such as knowledge (Medha), speech (Shruti) and radiance (Vedika). The meaning can be traced to a Sanskrit root or a named figure in the texts.

Vedic Baby Girl Names
What makes a girl’s name Vedic? It comes from Sanskrit, it is tied to the Vedas – the goddesses Aditi and Usha, the rivers, the dawn – and its meaning describes something the Vedas value: knowledge, speech, light, order, generosity. The women sages of the Vedic tradition (Arundhati, Gargi, Maitreyi, Lopamudra) are among the oldest recorded names a daughter can carry.

Hindu Girl Names by Rashi and Nakshatra
In Vedic tradition the name is taken not from the date of birth but from the position of the Moon at the moment of birth. The Moon sits in one of 27 nakshatras and, inside it, in one of four padas (quarters) – 108 syllables in all. The pada decides the sound the name should begin with, so the priest asks for the exact birth time before suggesting a name.
27 nakshatras x 4 padas = 108 naming syllables. Our nakshatra akshar guide lists each pada with its letters.
If your family follows the rashi (Moon sign) method instead, the choice of starting letters is wider – both systems are traditional, and rashi letters are the usual fallback when the exact birth time is unknown.
Want the syllable for your baby? The Baby Name Calculator works out the nakshatra, the pada and the letter from the birth details.
Find a name that fits your daughter. Enter the date, time and place of birth – the calculator gives the nakshatra, the starting syllable and a list of girl names that match.
Six steps, in the order most families actually do it:
1. Get the birth details right The syllable comes from the Moon’s position at birth, so the date, the exact time and the place all matter. A few minutes can move the Moon into the next pada.
2. Find the nakshatra and pada There are 27 nakshatras and four padas each, giving 108 naming syllables. Our nakshatra akshar guide lists all of them.
3. Collect names that start with that sound Dozens of girl names – traditional, modern and rare – begin with the same syllable, so the letter is a filter, not a limit.
4. Check the meaning of every shortlisted name A name should mean something you would happily explain to your daughter. Prefer meanings traceable to a Sanskrit root, a scripture or a named goddess.
5. Keep the classical shape in mind The Grihya Sutra tradition describes a girl’s name with an odd number of syllables ending in a long vowel – Sita, Radha, Gita, Lalita, Karuna. It is a softness rule, not a law.
6. Say the full name with the surname Say it, write it, and check that it is easy for the family, the school and the passport office – and that it still sounds like her name in twenty years.
After the naming, the next family ceremony is usually Annaprasana, the first grains. Between the two, the name is what the family uses every day, so keep the shortlist small and say each name out loud a few times.

Quick answers to the questions parents ask most often about Hindu baby girl names.
How do I choose a Hindu baby girl name?
Start with the tradition: most Hindu families take the first syllable from the baby’s birth nakshatra and then shortlist names that begin with that sound. After that, compare the meanings, how easily the name is said in the languages your family speaks, and how it sounds with the surname. Our baby name calculator does the syllable step for you in a minute.
What are some popular Hindu baby girl names?
Popular choices today include Aadhya (first power, a name of Durga), Ananya (unique), Aanya (gracious), Saanvi (a name of Lakshmi), Aadya (the beginning), Myra (beloved), Aaradhya (to be worshipped), Ira (earth), Riya (singer), Kiara (first ray of the sun) and Diya (lamp).
Which girl names are associated with Goddess Lakshmi?
Lakshmi, Shree, Saanvi, Kamala, Padma, Padmavati, Isha and Vaishnavi are linked with Goddess Lakshmi – some are her own names, others describe her (the lotus-born one, the one who brings prosperity). The names by meaning section above lists them with their meanings.
Which girl names are associated with Goddess Durga?
Durga, Shakti, Kali, Bhavani, Chandi, Aadhya, Devi and Shailja are connected with Goddess Durga. Durga’s nine forms during Navratri – Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri – are also used as girl names.
Do Hindu baby names have to start with the nakshatra letter?
Traditionally the naming name does. The Apastamba Grihya Sutra speaks of giving the child a nakshatra name, and the priest works out the syllable from the pada the Moon occupied at birth. Many families keep that as the formal name and use a second, everyday name as well.
When is the naming ceremony (namkaran) held?
Manusmriti 2.30 places namkaran on the tenth or the twelfth day after birth, on an auspicious tithi and nakshatra, and the Paraskara Grihya Sutra describes the naming on the tenth day. Most families today hold it on the eleventh or twelfth day, or within the first month.
What is the classical shape of a Hindu girl’s name?
The Grihya Sutra tradition describes a girl’s name with an odd number of syllables, ending in a long vowel, and Manusmriti 2.33 adds that it should be easy to pronounce, not harsh, clear in meaning and auspicious. Sita, Radha, Gita, Lalita and Karuna follow exactly that shape – three syllables ending in -aa.
Are Sanskrit names the same as Hindu names?
Not exactly. Sanskrit is the language most Hindu names come from, but a Hindu name can also be a regional form (Tamil, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu), a modern spelling of a Sanskrit name, or the popular name of a goddess. What makes a name Hindu is its meaning and its place in the tradition.
How can I find a unique Hindu baby girl name?
Look at the rarer end of the list – names tied to a particular goddess, river, mountain or flower, or to one of the women sages such as Arundhati, Gargi, Maitreyi or Lopamudra. Then check the meaning, the pronunciation in your languages, and (if you follow the tradition) the letter from the birth star.
What does the first letter of a Hindu name depend on?
It depends on the pada of the birth nakshatra – the quarter the Moon occupied at the moment of birth. That is why 27 nakshatras give 108 syllables, and why the birth time matters as much as the birth date.
Is the Baby Name Calculator free?
Yes. VedicFeed’s Hindu Baby Name Calculator is free: enter the baby’s date, time and place of birth and it works out the nakshatra, the pada and the starting syllable, then suggests names that fit – for girls and for boys.
