Hindu Baby Boy Names: 300+ Vedic Names With Meanings
Hindu baby boy names with meanings - 300+ Vedic, Puranic, modern and rare names, from Aadhar to Zehaan, plus the nakshatra letter rules for naming a boy.
Choosing a name for your baby boy is one of the most meaningful decisions you will make for him. A Hindu name usually carries three things at once – a meaning, a family tradition, and the sound of the child’s birth star. This page gives you 300+ Hindu baby boy names with meanings, arranged so you can browse by meaning, by tradition (Vedic, Puranic, modern, rare), or by the letter you have been given.
Selecting a name for a newborn (Namkaran) is one of the most important samskaras in Hindu Dharma. It is usually held on the 11th or 12th day after birth, after the family has seen the baby’s birth chart (Kundali in Vedic astrology). In most traditions the priest reads the syllable (akshar) from the baby’s birth nakshatra, and the family then chooses a name that starts with that sound – so the name is both beautiful and auspicious for the child.
Looking for a name that fits your baby and the birth star? Use our Baby Name Calculator – it is free.
Popular Hindu baby boy names include Aarav (peaceful), Aarush (first ray of the sun), Vivaan (full of life), Advik (unique), Atharv (knowledge), Vihaan (dawn), Arjun (bright and courageous), Dhruv (the pole star), Rudra (a name of Lord Shiva), Ishaan (the sun), Reyansh (ray of light) and Vedant (ultimate knowledge). A good name is easy to say, carries a meaning the family is happy to repeat for a lifetime, and fits the letter given for the baby’s birth star.
What is a Vedic baby boy name?
A Vedic baby boy name is drawn from the Vedic tradition – the Vedas and Upanishads, the names of Vedic deities (Agni, Surya, Varuna), the sages (rishis) and Vedic virtues such as knowledge, light, strength and truth. Its meaning can be traced to a Sanskrit root, a scripture or a named deity. Names like Agastya, Atharv, Aryaman, Vedant, Rishi and Yajur belong to this group.

Vedic Baby Boy Names
What makes a name Vedic? Three things: it comes from Sanskrit, it is tied to the Vedas or to the Vedic pantheon (Agni, Surya, Varuna, Usha, the rishis), and its meaning describes a quality the Vedas value – knowledge, light, truth, strength, speech. Names of the Vedic sages are a rich source: the family is literally naming the child after the people who preserved the texts.

Hindu Boy Names by Rashi and Nakshatra
In Vedic tradition the name is not chosen from the date of birth but from the position of the Moon at the moment of birth. The Moon sits in one of the 27 nakshatras, and inside that nakshatra in one of four padas (quarters) – 108 syllables in all. The pada decides the sound the name should begin with, which is why the family priest asks for the exact birth time before suggesting a name.
27 nakshatras x 4 padas = 108 naming syllables. Our nakshatra akshar guide lists every pada and its letters.
If you follow the rashi (Moon sign) method instead, you get a wider set of starting letters – both systems are traditional, and many families use the rashi letters when the exact birth time was not recorded.
Want the syllable for your baby? The Baby Name Calculator works out the nakshatra, the pada and the letter from the birth details.
Find a name that fits your baby. Enter the date, time and place of birth – the calculator gives you the nakshatra, the starting syllable and a list of names that match.
Six steps, in the order most families actually do it:
1. Get the birth details right The syllable comes from the Moon’s position at birth, so the date, the exact time and the place all matter. Even a few minutes can move the Moon from one pada to the next one.
2. Find the nakshatra and the pada There are 27 nakshatras and each has four padas, which gives 108 naming syllables. Our nakshatra akshar (name letter) guide lists all of them, nakshatra by nakshatra.
3. Collect names that start with that sound Use the letter as a filter, not as a limit: dozens of names – traditional, modern and rare – can begin with the same syllable.
4. Check the meaning of every shortlisted name A name should mean something you would happily explain to your son. Prefer names whose meaning can be traced to a Sanskrit root, a scripture or a named deity.
5. Say the name out loud, in every language of the family A name that is easy for the family, the school and the passport office is a name the child will not have to explain for the rest of his life.
6. Test it with the surname Say the full name, write it, and check that it does not become awkward, unintentionally funny, or hard to spell.
Once you have settled on the name, the next family ceremony is usually Annaprasana – the first grains. Between them, the name is what the family uses every single day, so keep the shortlist small and say each name out loud a few times.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the questions parents ask most often about Hindu baby boy names.
How do I choose a Hindu baby boy name?
Start with the tradition: most Hindu families take the first syllable from the baby’s birth nakshatra, and then shortlist names that begin with that sound. After that, compare the meanings, how easily the name is said in the languages your family speaks, and how it sounds with the surname. Our baby name calculator does the syllable step for you in a minute.
What are some popular Hindu baby boy names?
Popular choices today include Aarav (peaceful), Aarush (first ray of the sun), Vivaan (full of life), Advik (unique), Atharv (knowledge), Vihaan (dawn), Arjun (bright and courageous), Dhruv (the pole star), Ishaan (the sun), Rudra (Lord Shiva) and Reyansh (ray of light).
Which Hindu boy names are associated with Lord Shiva?
Rudra, Shankar, Mahesh, Neelkanth, Girish, Ishaan, Harish, Haren, Girik, Bhairav and Abhav are all connected with Lord Shiva – some are his own names, others describe him (the blue-throated one, the lord of the mountains). See the full list in the names by meaning section above.
Which Hindu boy names are associated with Lord Vishnu?
Vishnu, Hari, Narayan, Keshav, Madhav, Govind, Vasudev, Anay, Ijay and Parmesh are linked with Lord Vishnu. The Vishnu Sahasranama (the thousand names of Vishnu) is the classical source for most of them.
Do Hindu baby names have to start with the nakshatra letter?
Traditionally the naming name does. The Apastamba Grihya Sutra speaks of giving the child a nakshatra name, and the priest works out the syllable from the pada the Moon occupied at birth. Many families keep that as the formal or ceremonial name and also use a second everyday name.
When is the naming ceremony (namkaran) held?
Manusmriti 2.30 places namkaran on the tenth or the twelfth day after birth, on an auspicious tithi and nakshatra, and the Paraskara Grihya Sutra describes the naming on the tenth day. In practice most families hold it on the eleventh or twelfth day, or within the first month.
How many syllables should a boy’s name have?
The Grihya Sutra tradition prefers an even number of syllables for a boy – two or four, as in Dhruva, Arjun, Vedant or Abhimanyu. Names of two syllables are the easiest to say and spell, which is why so many popular Hindu boy names are short.
Are Sanskrit names the same as Hindu names?
Not exactly. Sanskrit is the language most Hindu names come from, but a Hindu name can also be a regional form (Tamil, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu), a modern spelling of a Sanskrit name, or the popular name of a deity. What makes a name Hindu is its meaning and its place in the tradition, not only the language of its spelling.
How can I find a unique Hindu baby boy name?
Look at the rarer end of the list – names tied to a particular sage, river, mountain or a less-used name of a deity, such as Aatreya, Kalap, Sudarshan or Adarsa. Then check three things: the meaning, how easy the name is to pronounce, and (if you follow the tradition) that it starts with the syllable given for the birth star.
What does the first letter of a Hindu name depend on?
It depends on the pada of the birth nakshatra – the quarter the Moon occupied at the moment of birth. That is why 27 nakshatras give 108 syllables, and why the birth time matters as much as the birth date.
Is the Baby Name Calculator free?
Yes. The Hindu Baby Name Calculator on VedicFeed is free to use: enter the baby’s date, time and place of birth, and it works out the nakshatra, the pada and the starting syllable, then suggests names that fit.
